Howe Gelb serves frequently as a footnote: He's the guy who released M. Ward's first record in a very limited edition, the conduit for the eventual rise of Calexico, the center of the strange universe known as Giant Sand. But Gelb's career is its own multi-volume epic, built so far on three decades of Southwestern soul, rock, folk and abstruse psychedelia murmured in a voice that is as strange as it is sublime. Gelb's personal and stylistic restlessness might have helped curb his broad appeal, but that's for the best, anyway. His essential records are curious, intimate things, where impressionistic images and errant thoughts curl into a new version of old, weird Americana. Last year's The Coincidentalist counts among those ranks. —Grayson Haver Currin
