A sequel that is a pleasant surprise, deepening the original's story and raising the emotional stakes. It lacks the sheer fun of the first movie but it creates a darker universe with a real sense of consequences with a world where major characters aren't safe and seemingly small-scale conflicts in the beginning gain major import. Its visuals are spectacular. The movie isn't perfect but it's never dull and is surprisingly ambitious. Unlike with most animated sequels you'll be ready for How to Train Your Dragon 3 by the end.
