Scottish director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland, State of Play) tends to make movies where the protagonist finds him or herself having to grow up real fast. So, it's not a surprise that he's adapted Meg Rosoff's post-apocalyptic young-adult novel for the screen. Saoirse Ronan plays a bratty American teen who stays with her British relatives in their rustic countryside home as World War III goes on around them. Unfortunately, by the time she loosens up (especially with a cousin she has an incestuous relationship with, which no one seems to mind), they're forced to evacuate the premises. She spends the rest of the movie trying to get back to that home and the warm, open arms of her cousin-lover. While this sounds like the most deranged coming-of-age movie you'll probably ever see, it's really a cluttered, inevitably hokey tale of young, undying love that'll probably make teenage girls wonder if they have family in the U.K.
