Appalachian music and alcohol have been a couple at least since bootleggers drove moonshine down from the mountains. It's an exciting and volatile union, with roots music exploring the joys and sorrows of everyday life, and alcohol tending to amplify the emotions even more. Over the years, old-time became bluegrass, and backwoods pot stills became craft breweries. Tonight delves into this new partnership: Natty Greene's Brewing Company sponsors the evening as part of its monthly Buck Shot & Smokin' Grass Series. The local brewery offers free beer tastings before the show and discounted beer through the night.

Locals the Hotwires offer the bluegrass portion of the evening. Fast and strong, the quintet blends like a nice pint of ale. Earthy tones establish a base that builds into a heady buzz. Percussive, scratching fiddle steps forward to solo. Bubbling banjo fills empty spaces, placing anyone who tries to follow it in a trance. Each member of the Hotwires is worth paying attention to separately, but the band excels at balance, making it all too easy to let the whole sound wash over you. —Andrew Ritchey
