Hot Tuna Acoustic, Jill Sobule

When: Thu., June 6, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $31-46

Jefferson Airplane spinoff Hot Tuna explores elegant folk-blues that bubbled from a similar spring as those of the Grateful Dead. Both were forged in the heart of the '60s San Francisco acid-folk movement, but Hot Tuna isn't as expansive. They periodically kick up dust behind singer-guitarist Jorma Kaukonen's slick lead work, too. Their first disc in more than two decades, 2011's Steady As She Goes, was a well-crafted effort, highlighted by the terrific steely bite of "Angel of Darkness." Still, it failed to recreate the spirited intimacy of their live shows. Perhaps this acoustic performance will fix that. Singer-songwriter Jill Sobule (of "I Kissed a Girl" renown) opens. —Chris Parker
