Hot Club of San Francisco

When: Fri., March 22, 7:30 p.m. 2013
Price: Free

The sound that Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli made with Le Quintette du Hot Club de France is instantly recognizable. Reinhardt's effortless gut-string runs and visceral strumming, alongside the gliding lines of Grappelli's violin, evoke Paris in the 1930s—sophisticated, smoky, swinging. With a lineup of three guitars, bass and violin, the Hot Club of San Francisco has been keeping alive the flame of Reinhardt and his music since the early '90s. But far from just being the Beatlemania of Gypsy jazz, HCSF weaves stunning versions of Django's repertoire with jazz standards and originals by the group's founder, guitarist Paul Mehling. Those new numbers incorporate his love of Dixieland, bluegrass and classic jazz. —David Klein
