Hospital Smokers, Rogue Band of Youth, Monologue Bombs

When: Thu., March 12, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $5
The songs of Raleigh’s Monologue Bombs sport their wear and weariness with pride. Downtrodden piano, accordion and acoustic guitars wash beneath Scott Phillips’ odes to the rejected and dejected. It’s an intimate reprieve from his work in trio Goner. Durham’s Hospital Smokers key on the smooth and affecting croon of Schooner’s Reid Johnson. As with that more noted main project, Johnson surrounds songs in distortion that alternately swaddles and scrapes. Hospital Smokers, however, are more sedate than the oft-combustible Schooner. —Jordan Lawrence
