Hope Larson

When: Sun., Oct. 7, 2 p.m. 2012

Asheville's Hope Larson has emerged as one of the most acclaimed comic creators of the past decade, winning multiple awards for such gentle, dreamlike graphic novels as Salamander Dream, Gray Horses and Chiggers. Now she's turned to adapting a book well-suited to her unique talents: Madeleine L'Engle's Newbery-winning SF/fantasy classic A Wrinkle in Time, the tale of a girl guided by cosmic beings to a distant planet to rescue her long-lost scientist father. It's one of the most extensive adaptations of an original text into comics—400 pages, nearly double the length of the original book—and Larson's unique combination of cartoony, expressive figures and fantastic, surreal elements was made for L'Engle's tale. Larson appears from 2 to 4 p.m.; plan your visit around Festifall for getting parking and, well, to maximize your cultural horizons for the afternoon. —Zack Smith
