Hooverville | Clubs & Concerts | Indy Week
This is a past event.

When: Sun., April 25, 7 p.m. 2010
Price: $10
Hooverville has always felt not so much otherworldly as other-placely—specifically, a long-gone small town surrounded by bluegrass hills and lonely pines and populated by dirt-track-driving boys and heart-stealing girls. It's a burg you can't bust out of even if you want to, "'Cause a town with just one road in/ Makes you feel like you're here to stay," or so goes a key Hooverville line. It's gotten progressively harder to visit that place because the guys don't gather much these days, save for special occasions such as this house concert to raise money for Carrboro's community radio station, WCOM. Hosting the concert is Calvin Powers, who does as much as anyone for roots music in the area thanks to his Monday-night Taproot Radio show on WCOM, his Taproot Web stream and an interview-packed monthly podcast. (And in a bit of self-promotion masquerading as full disclosure, I'll add that my Dirty Laundry radio program airs directly after Powers' show on WCOM.) —Rick Cornell
