One evening in September atop the Durham Hotel, I watched Stephanie Leathers and Kristin Taylor perform a minimalist dance piece on an adjacent roof. It was part of Leathers's Sunday SITES project, which, even as it demonstrates art in unusual places' capacity to startle, also draws attention to the subtle webs of power, class, wealth, access, and ownership that tautly encircle urban spaces. Home: the metamorphosis, which is part of the Durham Independent Dance Artists season, builds on this work as a "roaming multimedia installation and performance." It's a literal two-hour journey from Empower Dance Studio at 109 West Parrish Street to 806 West Main Street, the former site of Fishmonger's. Leathers teams with Taylor and others—not only dancers, but also musicians, photographers, and visual artists—to animate issues of sustainability, engaging audiences in the kinds of spaces development can leave derelict. —Brian Howe
