Holy Ghost Tent Revival, Annuals

When: Fri., Aug. 24, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $10-12

Speaking strictly in genre tags, Greensboro's Holy Ghost Tent Revival and Raleigh's Annuals are very different acts. Annuals' keyboard-and-handclaps anthems appeal to the indie rock crowd, while Holy Ghost Tent Revival's mix of zydeco, jazz and roots-rock fundamentals puts them more in line with jam-band devotees and camping festival scenes. But, for better and worse, both bands effuse a youthful exuberance, sidestepping restraint in order to stuff songs with all manner of sound and, in the best cases, with more opportunities to be hooked. Loud and restless, both big bands have taken very different paths to rooms the size of Cat's Cradle, a stage and sound system big enough for their emphatic impulses. Grayson Currin
