Holst's The Planets: An HD Odyssey (NC Symphony)

When: Sat., June 29, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $33-35

Where do you fall on Pluto's status as a planet? British composer Gustav Holst left the dwarf sphere out of his epic suite of compositions for each body in our solar system (except Earth) because it hadn't been discovered yet when he composed The Planets. William Henry Curry conducts the North Carolina Symphony and North Carolina Master Chorale through the popular compositions, but your eyes will be on the screen above the musicians. Spectacular imagery of the planets, culled from NASA rovers and satellites and combined with computer-generated imagery, is projected throughout the 60-minute program, though some critics have claimed that the imagery tends to overcome the music. Part of the symphony's Summerfest program, the evening includes the kid-friendly Instrument Zoo and a chance to win gift baskets from a roving picnic judge on the lawn. —Chris Vitiello
