Hip-Hop In The Gardens: Phonte, Rapsody, 9th Wonder

When: Wed., Aug. 19, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: free with Duke student ID
Legendary Duke basketball player Grant Hill once took part in a rap battle using ghostwritten raps from rising North Carolina emcee Rapsody, who also recorded a verse for the 2013–2014 Duke Men’s Basketball introduction video. Her Jamla Records labelhead 9th Wonder is an adjunct professor at Duke. Along with Phonte Coleman, he was part of the legendary hip-hop trio Little Brother. Those might be the reasons why all of the spoiled Duke freshmen get to see this show for free, even though every other hip-hop concert promoter in the country has probably been begging for 9th Wonder and Phonte to agree to an all-rap show for years. It’s definitely worth trying to sneak in to see this rare performance. —Eric Tullis
