Hindugrass, Prypat, Jay Manley

When: Sat., May 25, 8 p.m. 2013

The two halves of Hindugrass' name aptly describe the world fusion outfit: The band cuts a middle line between traditional Appalachian music and that of the Indian subcontinent, with jazz and assorted international flavors peppering the mix. Such an exploration of Indo-Appalachian intertextuality is an openly academic approach, yet Hindugrass successfully avoids the detached feel that can curse conservatory-minded outfits. There's something engaging and fairly danceable about their breakdowns of tabla, violin and sarod. Prypyat and Jay Manley open. —Corbie Hill
