Hindugrass, Crystal Bright & the Silver Hands, Jay Manley

When: Wed., Jan. 16, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $7

Many bands claim to have a "fresh new voice," as Hindugrass does in its online bio. But this Durham group's fusion of bluegrass and traditional Indian sounds actually lives up to that boast. Tastefully constructed, Hindugrass songs balance opposing textures and patterns. Banjo and mandolin converse with sitar and esraj in refreshing multicultural dialogues. In the middle slot, the less innovative Crystal Bright & the Silver Hands feed gypsy folk through a bubbly pop filter, coming off like a less adventurous Gogol Bordello. Jay Manley opens the $7 show at 8 p.m. —Jordan Lawrence
