Hillary Jordan

When: Mon., Dec. 5, 7 p.m. 2011

The Scarlet Letter is the latest classic to get a dystopian sci-fi update in Hillary Jordan's When She Woke. In this take on Hawthorne's classic, Hannah Payne is a recently released convict in an ultraconservative future where those convicted of crimes are "chromed." Hannah has been convicted of murder, ergo she's a "Red." As she seeks her place as a stigmatized woman in this sadly-not-all-that-far-fetched tale, she's forced to re-evaluate her life and values. And somehow, it will probably still be more faithful to the original story than the Demi Moore version. Jordan will read from and sign copies of When She Woke starting at 7 p.m. She's also at McIntyre's Books in Fearrington Village on Sunday at 2 p.m. —Zack Smith
