When: Sun., Sept. 13, 3 p.m. 2015

SONGS IN THE KEY OF JUSTICE

SUNDAY, SEPT. 13, DURHAM

SHARED VISIONS RETREAT CENTER—It isn't easy to create a community dialogue with people sentenced to die while incarcerated. "There's almost no communication from people inside prison with folks outside," says Hidden Voices founder Lynden Harris. Her group helps prisoners tell their stories in scripts and visual art, and then brings those stories outside prison walls. They then collect the public's responses and take them back inside. "Over time," she says, "we're creating a community call-and-response." In this fundraiser at the Murphey School, noted actors Estes Tarver, Jade Arnold and Phillip Bernard Smith perform the prisoners' compelling narratives, and inmate art is exhibited before a silent auction and a concert by folksinger and activist John Flynn. 3 p.m., $35–$75, 3717 Murphy School Road, Durham, 919-732-9299,
