The young Seattle songwriter Peter Michel, who records as Hibou, has something of a soft voice and a distended delivery that suggests an existential sigh. Lifted by reverb, those vocals suggest a billowing cloud, floating high above the bedrock of the songs beneath. On his forthcoming, self-titled debut LP for Barsuk, the instruments are often a coil of racing New Wave drums and twisting bass, a pillow of kaleidoscopic guitars and broad synthesizer lines. “Dissolve,” the record’s breathless lead single, conjures the romantic motion of a backwoods drive on a fall day, even if you’re sitting still. —Grayson Haver Currin
