Henry & the Invisibles

When: Mon., Aug. 12, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: Free
One-member bands, in which the sole proprietor plays and loops and layers several instruments, often become the domain of musical masturbation. The player wants to show you skills, but those skills are rarely attached to songs. Luckily, Henry & the Invisibles—a multi-instrumentalist named Henry Roland, backed by absolutely no one—understands he has to give his crowd something to sing to and to leave with. Thus, his funk numbers carry the sheen of Prince and the soul of Earth, Wind & Fire, giving his musical bravura a melodic anchor. —Grayson Currin
