Re: “Re: Goathouse Refuge

Following what I also agree was a rather one sided article, I am pleased to see comments in support of The Goathouse Refuge & Siglinda. Not only have I been a cat rescuer for many years myself, I too have frequently visited GHR with friends, and have seen nothing but many well cared for, happy cats in a very clean and pleasant environment. Many of the cats there would have died if not for Siglinda's kind heart. Her volunteers are to be commended as well for all of their hard work helping to care for so many homeless cats in need.
Few people will dedicate themselves and their lives to this extremely dire cat overpopulation crisis, as Siglinda has, and yet when they do, they should be embraced and helped instead of criticized, especially in the media. She not only cares for a large cat population, but also has many wonderful fundraising events which lead to both cat adoptions and/or donations to also help the cats there. It is very easy for others to criticize those who take on such enormous responsibilities, when they have done little in comparison to help the same needy cause. Like any non-profit organization/rescue, there are problems that ideally are corrected, learned from and improved, as they continue moving forward. It is my hope (and that of other Siglinda supporters I know), that any problems will be addressed and quickly corrected, and that GHR can continue to do an outstanding job in supporting the community and the many cats in need. Perhaps if more people volunteered and foster homes were used (even if on a temporary basis?), and there were few if no more intakes for a period of time, the cat population could be better monitored, if that is indeed one of the main issues, as highlighted in the article.
In any case, I applaud GHR & Siglinda, and any other organizations and individuals dedicated to helping myself and other rescuers to battle the ongoing cat overpopulation crisis - which is extremely expensive, quite exhausting (physically & mentally!), and often overwhelmingly sad. I recommend that anyone who has time to criticize all that GHR is working so hard to accomplish, should instead offer to use that time to volunteer either there, or at any other non-profit group, shelter or private rescue in the area, that could ideally use more helping hands to assist all of the poor, innocent, wonderful felines we are working so hard to save.
