Re: “An unceremonious, non-musical farewell for the Cameron Village Underground

Goodnight Raleigh! did a fantastic and very popular piece on the Subway several years before Candid Slice existed, and I never want to divert credit from their initial article. My original article on the Underground was not so much a history piece, as first-person narrative of my discovery and curiosity of the Village Subway -- never meant to replace Goodnight Raleigh's. However, within that first week over 100,000 people read the article, and WRAL invited me down into the Subway for an interview. I was completely astounded by the reception and had no idea what I'd tapped into. Over the past year, more than a million people have read, responded, e-mailed, shared, and basically given measurable proof that the Subway has value for Cameron Village. I then approached Cameron Village with these numbers and my marketing background, which resulted in The Underground Rises. Later, I approached the museum with an idea for an exhibit, as well as Cameron Village. If anything, my original article was far inferior to Goodnight Raleigh's. But it happened to spark a fire -- who can say why things go viral? And I've fanned that flame, contacting museums and influences and Cameron Village representatives because I LOVE the Subway and it's history. But believe me -- I've never forgotten Goodnight Raleigh and Karl Larson's amazing and deeply rooted contributions to our local history, and I always link to them and share their stories. :)
