Before 2002, the phrase "heartwarming musical" and the name of outré filmmaker John Waters were never seen in the same sentence. Then Marc O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan adapted Waters' 1988 film about an unsinkable plus-sized teen who helped bring racial integration to a 1962 Baltimore TV dance show. Hairspray ran for six years on Broadway, garnering eight Tony Awards, including nods for best musical, book and score. L.D. Burris directs a cast including Emma Wyatt, Tony Hefner and Brian Hollingsworth. Raleigh Little Theatre is also partnering with The Monti for a companion series of workshops and shows where you can tell a personal story on a theme related to Hairspray, "Bridging Gaps." Details are at the theater's website; pitches are currently being accepted at —Byron Woods
