Hailu Mergia, Savage Knights, Dub Addis

When: Fri., Oct. 27, 9 p.m. 2017
Price: $12-$15

As a member of Ethiopia's Walias Band in the seventies, Hailu Mergia built up his chops as the architect of an intoxicating strain of jazz. The band steeped its approach in some of the musical styles of its home country but, after a first tour of the U.S., chose to remain stateside rather than return to their dictator-controlled home. On keys and accordion, Mergia's airy, intricate additions straddled the familiar and the futuristic. Now based in Washington, D.C., Mergia has spent recent years continuing to perform, while also enjoying revived public interest in his work with the Walias Band, thanks to efforts by the African label Awesome Tapes to reissue his work. His stop in Raleigh is an occasion to see a creative master in action. Savage Knights andDub Addis open. —Allison Hussey
