Hadwynn, The Lion in Winter, The Record

When: Wed., April 4, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $5

Raleigh rock trio Hadwynn's melodramatic musings come packaged as generic emo-pop, with senseless screaming to boot. But they're blessed by big hooks. While taking an occasional detour into moody or folky ballads, the band—wearing its heart on its sleeve with lyricism heavily influenced by its Christian beliefs—is at its best when sticking to the dramatic and dynamic formula of its louder moments. South Carolina indie outfit The Lion in Winter opens, drawing obvious inspiration from early Radiohead on offerings that balance grand ambition with delicate delivery. —Spencer Griffith
