NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF ART—Director James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy combines the best of both sides of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It blends the interstellar bombast of the Avengers films and the humorous heisting of Ant-Man into an epic but light-footed picaresque. Rascally everyman Chris Pratt plays Peter Quill, an Earth boy who gets thrown in with a ragtag crew of space pirates that includes a homicidal talking raccoon and a sentient tree. Their quest for an Ill-Defined Object of Unimaginable Power is secondary to thrilling set pieces (such as the early prison break sequence), snarky, spunky banter and growing emotional bonds. With shades of the Indiana Jones franchise and Stars Wars, it's all the high-wire fun of a summer blockbuster with none of the leaden posturing. Guardians delivers the action goods while verging on being a parody of them (catch green-skinned assassin Gamora's bored yawn during the requisite badass-slow-motion walking scene), and there's no better place to see it now than outdoors at NCMA, under the stars that are its primary setting. 8:30 p.m., $5 (members and children under 6 free), 2110 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, 919-839-6262, —Brian Howe
