Greg Trooper

When: Sun., June 23, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: $10

Greg Trooper has long been an underappreciated artist. A New Jersey native, he grew up on Greenwich Village folk but adopted a country vein as his career took off during years in New York and Nashville. Age seems to have distilled his strengths: His latest, Upside-Down Town, bears witness, showcasing his warm, gruff voice and balanced writing skills, from the wistful folk lullaby "First True Love" to the Bob Seger-ish blues-rock stomp "Bulletproof Heart" to the humorous gospel-roots paean to heaven's preferred carriage, "Might Be a Train." —Chris Parker
