Comedy, Drama

Roger Greenberg (Ben Stiller), a 41-year-old malcontent, is crashing at his vacationing brother's house in Los Angeles when he strikes up a tentative romance with his brother's young assistant, Florence (Greta Gerwig). Writer-director Noah Baumbach's insightful and funny films are all-too-knowing, prickly run-on sentences that take place in a heightened, talkative version of reality. But in Greenberg, his technique crumbles after the first few scenes as haphazard compositions and a saggy script can't energize the poorly constructed relationship of the central characters or Gerwig's loose performance.

Noah Baumbach's Greenberg

Greenberg is a bummer because for the first few scenes of the film, Baumbach seems to be on the verge of making his best film yet, and then it turns into a deeply disappointing flameout. »
