Great Lake Swimmers, Mary Johnson Rockers and the Spark

When: Fri., May 8, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $16-$18
Whether a matter of marketing, timing or sheer bad luck, Toronto’s Great Lake Swimmers have never quite found the widespread reach their ambitious, lush folk-pop has long suggested. In the wake of the recent ascendance of acts like Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers or even Father John Misty, their latest, A Forest of Arms, seems primed for popularity. It’s laced with huge hooks, swept with luxuriant strings and harmonies and built around thoughtful words and agile rhythms. It does seem safely stuck in the middle, though, as if Great Lake Swimmers’ arty inclinations are in gridlock against the sing-along prospects. —Grayson Haver Currin
