Great Dog Almighty, Baby Copperhead, Limbs

When: Wed., Dec. 22, 8:30 p.m. 2010
Price: $5

Great Dog Almighty performs short vignettes of beautiful sadness echoing through time from the Civil War. Guitar, banjo, mandolin and the occasional fiddle support John Bennett's rich baritone that rises into a soulful, gentle falsetto. First-person lyrics examine the war from multiple perspectives. A paralyzed man wakes up on a battlefield surrounded by limbs and ashes. He proclaims, "58 dead out of 70," noting the solidarity and fraternity of his fellow soldiers. The song sways somewhere between a lullaby and a drinking number. Indeed, on a sweltering jam about Reconstruction, a Union soldier spits out, "You can have your fucking honor/ I've got my whiskey, sorrow, smoke." Opening are the space banjo of Baby Copperhead and the stripped-down Schooner/ Organos outfit Limbs. —Andrew Ritchey
