Gray Young, Bright Young Things

When: Thu., Nov. 11, 10 p.m. 2010
Price: Free

Under new management since longtime Tir na nOg booking agent Chris Tamplin headed to Durham to run the new rock club Motorco, the popular Local Beer Local Band series has recently expanded to include a set of guest curators. Here, the blog New Raleigh takes over and turns in reliable if usual suspects: Bright Young Things and Gray Young are two of the Triangle's best-loved, relatively new acts. Gray Young uses terse instrumentals and expansive anthems that suggest post-rock bands reinterpreting U2, so drama and tension are their currency. Bright Young Things, however, specialize in breezy, cocksure vintage rock, like Spoon with slightly tarnished hooks and fewer interlocking parts. The surprise here is opener Heads on Sticks, the long-missed solo project of Birds of Avalon bassist David Mueller. Expect outré psychedelic rock informed by minimal techno and spasmodic jazz. The free show starts at 10 p.m. —Grayson Currin
