GRAVITY & OTHER MYTHS: A SIMPLE SPACE

STEWART THEATRE, RALEIGH

THURSDAY, NOV. 5–SATURDAY, NOV. 7

Some like their liquor neat, undiluted by fruit slices, mixers, ice or paper umbrellas. Australia's Gravity & Other Myths is the cirque equivalent. The company's minimal aesthetic strips the glitz off Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics and subtracts the whizzing gizmos from Elizabeth Streb's extreme performances. What's left? Human bodies doing incredible things as they construct improbable one-, two- and three-story configurations on an otherwise empty stage. The proximity of the performers under unadorned light bulbs, turned on and off by a group of seven acrobats and percussionist Elliot Zoerner onstage, evokes the primal mystery and intimacy of the Ten-In-One, those fabled carny sideshows of yesteryear. You can all but smell the sawdust as the crew carefully negotiates multi-story leaps and balances, flinging one another toward the skies—and, occasionally, the audience. Step right up. 8 p.m. Thurs.–Sat.; 3 p.m. Sat.,

$28–$32, 2610 Cates Ave., Raleigh, 919-515-1100,
