Grant Hart, Static Minds, Venables

When: Fri., Jan. 14, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $7
Though he was a key member of hugely influential '80s underground icons Hüsker Dü, Grant Hart has not enjoyed the same post-Dü profile of former bandmate Bob Mould. After the band split, Hart released the terrific 2541 EP and 1989's Intolerance, which were influenced by psychedelica and sunnier vocal melodies than Mould's solo work. But when each inaugurated the '90s with a new band Mould's Sugar took off while Hart's Nova Mob floundered. That trajectory continued. Indeed, it took a decade for Hart to answer 1999's Good News for Modern Man with 2009's Hot Wax, his finest collection of songs ever. Blending chunky garage-psych with sweet, tuneful psych-pop and thick swells of guitar distortion, Hart rediscovers the musical vibrancy of his earliest work in an eclectic batch of memorable tunes. Let's hope there's more where this came from. Also on the bill are Static Minds and Venables. —Chris Parker
