Granny's Got Game

When: Mon., May 20, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: $8
Although women's basketball has long been a fixture on TV and the WNBA has been in existence for nearly two decades, it's worth remembering that women have been playing hoops almost as long as men have. (Trivia: Before she became a music legend, Tammy Wynette was a star player on her 1950s Mississippi high school team.) The subject of Granny's Got Game, Angela Gorsica Alford's debut documentary, is a team of elderly women—most were players in their youth—who play very competitive basketball today. Before she turned to filmmaking, Alford was a star player for Vanderbilt and with USA Basketball. This screening is the North Carolina premiere, and subjects from the film will be present, along with Alford. —David Fellerath
