GrandMothers of Invention

When: Wed., July 3, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $20-25

As one of history's most prolific recording artists, Frank Zappa sold a lot of records in his time. But he didn't really appeal to the masses, and the masses didn't appeal to him. Both high-minded and juvenile, his songs were full of byzantine changes, avant garde instrumentation and withering sarcasm. He mocked hippies at the height of flower power, derided disco boys and Valley girls in subsequent decades and continued to be a provocateur until his death from prostate cancer in 1993. Since then, his music has been performed in a variety of settings, from symphonic tributes to crowd-pleasing club dates like this one. Formed in 2002 by four Zappa cohorts, the GrandMothers have been playing Zappa's complex creations since 2003, and they have the will (and the chops) to pull them off. —David Klein
