Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Blues & Lasers

When: Wed., July 21, 8:30 p.m. 2010
Price: $14–$18

They've been slumming it with jam bands the past few years, but that's less indicative of their approach than sympathies for a similar musical era. Grace Potter's a moneymaker-shaking, soul-drenched belter genuflecting at the altar of Joplin while fronting funky organ-driven blues rockers. Her band's loose-limbed grooves are less likely to luxuriate than curl about Potter's sultry alto. She's less effective with moody than saucy, so the tempos tend to surge. After aborted sessions with T-Bone Burnett, they enlisted producer Mark Baston (Seal, Nas, Jay-Z) for their polished, radio-ready Southern-rock-and-soul-biting self-titled fourth album. Blues & Lasers open the 8:30 p.m. show. Chris Parker
