Re: “Letters to the Editor

You quote Alexander Hamilton as if he represents the views of all the founders, in every way. You are in fact forgetting the great battles fought between Alexander Hamilton-- who wanted a centralized government and central planning such as you describe-- and the groups led by Thomas Jefferson, which wanted a more federalist system in which states had most of the power. The federalists won the day and our Constitution grants more powers to the states than it does to the federal government, but I'm sure the Founders would be horrified to find that today many of Hamilton's ideas have been creeping back into acceptance (helped along by politicians who completely ignore the Constitution).

Re: “Beef and dairy can be good for the planet

Your argument is unconvincing at best. The problem is not just cows, but pigs as well, and the problem goes beyond simply cutting down rainforests (which our US tax dollars pay for, by the way, through the World Bank!). A situation like Smithfield's operation in NC certainly is not environmentally friendly and contaminates the air, emissions, and half of eastern North Carolina's groundwater. More local operations may be better, but that doesn't make them environmentally friendly-- and they're not the ones providing the bulk of meat which Americans buy in their stores. You also ignore the fact that millions of people in this world go hungry while most of the wheat grown in this world-- and much of the corn and other crops-- go to feed cows. It's not just magic that feeds these cows, they eat the same things we should, and they're competing with us for that food. Why have food prices gone up so much? Ethanol and cows are continuing to consume so much of our corn crops. Take a clue from the cows and start a healthy, really environmentally friendly vegetarian diet.
