Few things are harder to play well than Bach’s music for solo strings. Despite the complexity, it needs to sound effortless. Despite the power of the ideas, it needs to be controlled. Oh, and there’s the fact that he loves to keep two (and sometimes three) lines going at the same time on an instrument with only four strings. Gil Shaham can do all of that and more with apparent ease on Bach’s “Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin.” A new multimedia work by David Michalek accompanies him. —Dan Ruccia
