Gigan, Pyrrhon, Artificial Brain, Escher

When: Mon., Sept. 22, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $8

Been feeling a bit too normal? Need to have your head scrambled? The three touring bands on this bill—Chicago's Gigan, Brooklyn's Pyrrhon and upstate New York's Artificial Brain—all push death metal to extremes of density and dynamics. They pile riffs atop layers of noise, wrap it around a twisting root of incalculable rhythms, and barb it all with squealed, shouted or grunted lyrics about space, metaphysics and horrors. Gigan are the elders here, but Pyrrhon can claim one of the year's best heavy records with The Mother of Virtues, a record that feels like life inside a very dangerous pinball game. With Raleigh's Escher. —Grayson Haver Currin
