Ghost of a Saber Toothed Tiger, Julianna Barwick

When: Wed., Jan. 12, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $15
The Magic Place is the aptly named second album from Brooklyn singer and composer Julianna Barwick, who winds her round soprano through a series of loops to make music that suggests a Christmas cantata beneath the waves. Barwick's work has been called "largely a cappella," but that terminology emphasizes gimmick more than imagination. Above, beneath and around layers of vocals that stretch like gauze, Barwick adds piano, synthesizer and astral sounds that don't suggest an identifiable origin. Like the symphonies for massed guitar by Rhys Chatham or Glenn Branca or the quiet epics of The Stars of the Lid, Barwick's music is a blanket that sounds big enough to coddle the whole world at once. Headliner The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger is the new project of model Charlotte Kemp Muhl and her boyfriend, rock heir Sean Lennon. —Grayson Currin
