FLYLEAF BOOKS—Against a plaster wall, old clothes droop from a line above a dying houseplant. An oval mirror traps a shelf of household cleaners and a Mona Lisa print. A bronze horse bucks in a nondescript concrete alcove. These are a few of the strikingly composed, technically skilled images in Basement Sanctuaries (Schilt Publishing), a new book by photographer Gesche Würfel. A native of Germany who has lived in the U.S. since 2009, Würfel began shooting pictures of New York City apartment building basements while looking for a place to live. The images reveal how superintendents, many of whom are immigrants, construct shrines to place, culture and class in semi-private spaces. The photos are at once ordinary and packed with the thrill of entering secret lives. Würfel discusses the project and signs books at Flyleaf. 2 p.m., free, 752 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., 919-942-7373, www.flyleafbooks.com. —Brian Howe
