The most sampled funk act outside of James Brown, The Meters were Allen Toussaint's house band, known for their tight syncopation and indelible melodies. After the quintet imploded in the late '70s, bassist and singer George Porter Jr. became an in-demand session player. He now balances his solo band with a reunited Meters (dubbed The Funky Meters) and The Meter Men, which finds The Meters joined by Phish's Paige McConnell instead of Art Neville. For his last solo disc, 2011's Can't Beat the Funk, Porter reworked and modernized 14 old, underrepresented Meters instrumentals, balancing greasy groove and soul slink. —Chris Parker
