Gem of the Ocean

When: May 9-11 and May 15-18 2014
Price: $12-$16

Playwright August Wilson waited nearly until the end of his life to fill in the beginning of his mammoth "Century Cycle," where 10 plays—set in and around Pittsburgh in 10 different decades—give a sweeping view of the 20th-century African-American experience. In Gem of the Ocean, it's 1904, and a bewildered Citizen Barlow, recently arrived from the South, seeks shelter at the home of Aunt Ester, an uncanny, ageless "washer of souls." But how can anyone wash away a murder? John Harris directs a cast including Jade Arnold, Gil Faison, Juanda LaJoyce Holley and Phillip Bernard Smith in this long-awaited regional premiere. The show runs through May 18. —Byron Woods
