Gem Club, Animal Alphabet, Holy Spirits

When: Wed., Oct. 5, 9:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $6

Gem Club like to keep things simple, but that doesn't mean this Boston duo is simplistic. They mostly employ two instruments (cello and piano), and they do so sparingly, so the silences between each cluster of notes seem like some invisible band member. Atop this minimalistic backdrop, Christopher Barnes adds mournful whisper-like vocals and equally minimal lyrics. For something so delicate, though, Gem Club's songs pack quite a punch on Breakers, their recently released full-length debut. Opening are two groups squarely on Gem Club's wavelength: Chapel Hill's Animal Alphabet and Gem Club collaborators Holy Spirits. The $6 show starts at 9:30 p.m.—David Raposa
