GB Live series with Justin Johnson, Skinny Bag of Sugar

When: Fri., July 19, 6 p.m. 2013
Price: Free

Justin Johnson is one of the Triangle's overlooked treasures, a virtuosic slide player who specializes in handmade string instruments, from cigar box guitars to one-string diddley bows. He plays a loose, jazzy, gypsy blues style with a modern sensibility, blending eclectic influences from the Middle Eastern and surf twinge of Dick Dale to Django Reinhardt's hot-blooded sophistication. Openers Skinny Bag of Sugar feature music vet Hugh Swaso leading a quartet through catchy mid-tempo roots-soul suggestive of Counting Crows. —Chris Parker
