GAYLE STOTT LOWRY: FINDING YOURSELF IN UNKNOWN TERRITORY | SATURDAY, OCT. 18, CHAPEL HILL
TYNDALL GALLERIES—In her artist's statement for her show of new paintings at Tyndall Galleries in University Mall, Raleigh's Gayle Stott Lowry talks about the clarity of vision bred by unfamiliar sights. That kind of lucid-dreamy perception penetrates these architecture paintings from Lowry's global travels in Cuba, Barcelona, Florence and Seville. The plain, stolid subjects—arches and columns, windows and doors, the occasional domestic or street scene—are infused with intense color, rendered in glowing, brushy clouds that bear the influences of Van Gogh and Monet. After this opening reception, the show runs through Nov. 15. 7 p.m., free, 201 S. Estes Dr., 919-942-2290, www.tyndallgalleries.com. —Brian Howe
