Re: “Superchunk bassist and Merge co-founder Laura Ballance bows out of touring, not out of the music that empowered her

I applaud Laura for consistently trying to remove gender from the conversation over the years when it's all anyone wanted to talk to her about. They'd ask Mac all the band questions and then ask Laura the girl-in-a-band questions. I see her storyline more as a triumph for shy people and misfits learning to express themselves and find their place in the world--even creating their own piece of that world. She is a truly inspiring figure to me and--gasp!--I'm a guy.

Re: “Durham

You don't have to endorse Steve Schewel! Anyone who comes across him for 10 minutes (let alone the nearly 20 years I've known him) will get a palpable sense of why he'd be a great fit for public office. He is smart, thoughtful and follows his conscience. He cares deeply for the people around him and he cares deeply for Durham, the town he lives in, loves and has helped prop up through many years less promising than these last few locally. I'll be nagging my neighbors and friends to vote for him and I hope other people within his Six Degrees will be doing the same.

Re: “World Cup reveals "hopefulness, a newness, a sense of progress" in South Africa

I somehow missed this column when it was first published and am grateful to have found it. Reading it now fills my eyes with memories of that magical month of summer, the strange odyssey of the US team, the ups and downs of Ghana's quest to carry all of Africa on its shoulders and the general sense the World Cup provides that all is right with the world. (Notwithstanding the atrocious refereeing, flopping etc etc.) Is it really 4 years minus a couple months til the next one? Sigh.
