Re: “The Durham Hotel Ejects an Asian Man from Its Rooftop Bar, Is Accused of Racism, Blames “Mistaken Identity”

Until real evidence shows otherwise, I have no reason not to believe the rooftop bar's story -- that they received an actual complaint (though maybe was a hoax) and acted on it according to a policy that they develop according to how other businesses act and how law enforcement advises. So, under that assumption, I say this:

Michael Cho should hope that nobody ever has such success in spreading shame far and wide over a simple mistake that *he* will one day make as a radiologist, jeopardizing the career he worked so hard for and risked so much to achieve -- it seems he would be happy if business all but dried up at the rooftop bar and it had to close down, even if he believed it was actually a case of mistaken identity. The Durham Hotel's rooftop bar is being obliterated from far and wide by non-first-person negative comments, reviews, and sentiments. Let the witch hunt begin!

When somebody describes an Asian person (and maybe also his/her clothes, gender, etc.) as being the source of a safety issue, and no doubt provides some story about something that happened, and the bar manager has a responsibility to address it and goes to look for an Asian person that fits that description, that is not an act of racism. It is an act of searching for a person who looks like the person who was described to you. I believe Michael Cho described in his FB post that he was the only Asian person on the rooftop ... what do we really expect the bar manager to do? You'll say "talk to Michael! Find out what's going on and realize it's nonsense!" I get that sentiment to some extent. But, although this false positive hurt Michael Cho emotionally, what happens when the bar manager doesn't kick somebody out and a false *negative* ID occurs -- then physical harm or violence happens. Which of these do you expect a business to favor?

Maybe more facts will come out, but until they do, I think the witch hunt that has already been set off is a sad consequence, and again Michael Cho should hope and pray nobody ever treats a radiological mistake of his as he has treated the rooftop bar. If he thinks Durham has it out for Asian people, he must not be much of a "resident" at Duke after all.
