Garrison Keillor

When: Mon., March 7, 7:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $25-$75

Garrison Keillor clearly wishes he were born a singer. Listeners to A Prairie Home Companion are treated more and more to his breathy, mashed-potatoes crooning, often in lopsided duets with accomplished vocalists. He can more or less adequately carry a tune, if it's simple, but he'd never make it past the chump round of American Idol. Fortunately for him, he's earned the right to indulge his Mel Tormé fantasies by playing to his strengths as one of America's foremost comic writers (comic more in the sense of Mark Twain than Jerry Seinfeld). He built up an audience over decades with his Lake Wobegon dispatches on PHC, which show an unstoppable gift for storytelling. And when he sets folksiness and humor aside in his more serious writing, as in his recent review of Twain's autobiography in The New York Times Book Review, he's a penetrating critic and a keen stylist. Keillor brought Prairie Home to DPAC for a sold-out show two years ago in May. This time he's coming without the radio crew—which means he probably won't sing. —Marc Maximov
