When: Mon., May 20, 7:30 p.m. 2013
One-time North Carolinian Gail Godwin has since moved to Woodstock, N.Y., but she returns on behalf of her new book, Flora. Set in the Appalachians at the close of World War II, it's a memory tale in which the 10-year-old protagonist struggles to hang on to her disintegrating household as she's left in the care of a guardian while her father works on a mysterious project in nearby Oak Ridge, Tenn. —David Fellerath
