G Love & Special Sauce, Swear & Shake

When: Wed., Jan. 23, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $20-25

A white guy with a little scruff, wearing a silly bowler hat with his shirt unbuttoned, affecting a Deep South accent as he picks the blues and—oh, goddamn it—raps? Has there ever been an easier target for allegations of inauthenticity or outright condescension than 40-year-old, Philadelphia-born rich kid G. Love? Maybe not, but it's also worth noting that he's at least tried to salvage some greater and, admittedly, younger interest in American blues, whether that's meant chimeras of blues and bluegrass (see his Avett Brothers-backed 2011 LP, Fixin' to Die) or blues and hip-hop ("At B.K., yo, I'll buy a girl a drink," reads his biggest hit). Coupled with a few charming tunes over the course of the last two decades, G. Love's career has been awkward and occasionally embarrassing, but his zeal for these hybrids seems genuine enough. Whether that makes him a fool or a fighter or both is your choice, really. Swear and Shake opens the show at 9 p.m. —Grayson Currin
